how much more

He said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life? If then you are not able to do so small a thing as that, why do you worry about the rest? Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith! And do not keep striving for what you are to eat and what you are to drink, and do not keep worrying. For it is the nations of the world that strive after all these things, and your Father knows that you need them. Instead, strive for his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well. (Luke 12:22-31, NRSV)

Do not worry!

Now that is easier said than done. I know it is hard. I have a new driver in the house and I worry every time she gets behind the wheel. Not because she can’t handle it or isn’t mature enough to be there. She can handle it and is ready to do this. I worry because of the things I can not control (as if I can control a 16-year-old!). The other drivers, the conditions under which she is driving. Not worrying is not easy.

But can any of us really change anything by worrying about it?

We can not keep our loved ones safe by worrying about what might happen to them. We can help them by praying that God would be with them.

We can help them and ourselves by remembering the care God gives to His creation and won’t He do that and much more for His children?

As the author says here, “Of how much more value are you than the birds!” You are of value to God. Remember that and don’t sweat it, because God has got this!

worry

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life? And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’For it is the Gentiles who strive for all these things; and indeed your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. “So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today’s trouble is enough for today. (Matthew 6:25-34, NRSV)

Easy to say don’t worry about what you will eat or wear, but as an adult who is responsible for young people, you worry. You worry about what they will eat and will the money be there to pay for the housing they live in. We worry about these things. And God tells us not to.

We can trust that as He provides for the birds that neither plant nor toil, but have plenty, and the flowers of the field which are beautiful beyond anything else, God provides for these, He will provide for us.

So do not worry. God will provide what you need.

Faith

161005On the following day, when they came from Bethany, he was hungry. Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to see whether perhaps he would find anything on it. When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. He said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard it. Then they came to Jerusalem. And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who were selling and those who were buying in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves; and he would not allow anyone to carry anything through the temple. He was teaching and saying, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? But you have made it a den of robbers.” And when the chief priests and the scribes heard it, they kept looking for a way to kill him; for they were afraid of him, because the whole crowd was spellbound by his teaching. And when evening came, Jesus and his disciples went out of the city. In the morning as they passed by, they saw the fig tree withered away to its roots. Then Peter remembered and said to him, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered.” Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. Truly I tell you, if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and if you do not doubt in your heart, but believe that what you say will come to pass, it will be done for you. So I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. (Mark 11:12-24, NRSV)

It was not the season for figs, yet Jesus still cursed the fig tree because there was no fruit?

“if you do not doubt in your heart, but believe that what you say will come to pass, it will be done for you.”

I think we have all prayed for something and truly believed in our heart it was something that could happen, and it didn’t happen. So if I do not believe in what I ask it can’t happen?

Now don’t get me wrong the power of positive thoughts is something, but things have happened in my life that I wondered if they would happen, and God provided.

I think the money changers smashed in between the cursing and the believing is a sign that our outlook can not be for our own gain.

We will get what we ask for when it is not for our own gain but is for others. To be honest I wonder about this text. Becuase by this text if you believe it will be given, so if it wasn’t given you didn’t believe.

Not saying belief is not important, but if I doubt will God forget about me?

Keep the faith in the promises God has made and make your requests and if it is in His will, it will be done. And remember God’s ways and plans are much greater than ours, and we may not understand now, but all will be made clear in time.

strive

160804He said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or about your body, what you will wear. (Luke 1:22-31, NRSV)

Can you add a day to your life by worrying about things?

Can you make your hair grow or change by worrying about it?

The birds of the air and the lilies of the field do not toil or worry over where their food or colors will come from, but rest in the ever loving hand of our creator and get what they need from God.

If we are working towards earthly comforts we will be looking for our own comfort and not living out the kingdom values that Jesus came to teach us. We need to strive and work for the kingdom of God, storing up our treasures in Heaven.

Then we will not be striving for success but rather be striving for the kingdom of God and will be showing forth His love in everything we do!

everything

160722Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you. (Philippians 4:6-9, NRSV)

Do not worry about anything!

Yea right, can I list off the things I worry about on a daily basis:

My family
The congregation I serve
the safety of my children
the world around me

and that is a short list and not comprehensive.

We are a worrying people.

But Paul has a point here.

We should not worry.

And why we should not worry is because we can take everything to God. Through prayer and supplication we can take our worries to God and leave them at His feet and He will take care of it. And not only will God take care of the worries He will guard our hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. He will guard us from more worry!

Do not worry because you can not change the thing you are worrying about or add any time to your life or the lives of others.

The birds are clothed and have food. God provides for them, and He will provide for you.

All things will be given!

Worrying can not add time, or change the world, only God can do that. So trust God and you will have all you need!

Do not worry

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. (Philippians 4:4-9, NRSV)

Is it easy not to worry?

And if you are like me, usually when someone says not to worry, I worry more.

I can always find something to worry about.

And if we are honest with ourselves, we could all never be at a loss for things to worry about.

But we are not supposed to worry.

Because Jesus will always be with us. Does this mean everything will always be wonderful and great.

No. But in everything we can pray and He will always be with us. By not worrying we are focusing on the good, and not the bad.

Focus on His love, and that will get you through.
