Ruth and Boaz at the Threshing Floor

So she lay at his feet until morning, but got up before one person could recognize another; for he said, “It must not be known that the woman came to the threshing floor.” Then he said, “Bring the cloak you are wearing and hold it out.” So she held it, and he measured out six measures of barley, and put it on her back; then he went into the city. (Ruth 3:14-15, NRSV)

She left before anyone would see since Boaz was not the next of kin so there would be no questions. Seems a little underhanded for a story from the Bible. But I believe it shows us that God can and does work in and through all circumstances. Becuase Boaz was an honorable man. He gave Ruth six measures of barley to take back to Naomi.

Even in what some would see as shame and darkness, the light and love of God shines through.

How do we shine the light and love of God in our world?

Jesus is Presented in the Temple

After eight days had passed, it was time to circumcise the child; and he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord(as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord”), and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.” Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying,“Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.” (Luke 2:21-32, NRSV)

Simeon was a man who was told by the Lord that he would see the Messiah before he died.

And when Mary and Joseph brought Jesus on the eighth day to be circumcised, Simeon knew who He was.

Do we have a faith like Simeon?

Where we can wait on the Lord?

Where we trust what He has told us?

His light is shining, are we allowing it through or blocking it?

Moses and Aaron obey God’s commands

On the day when the Lord spoke to Moses in the land of Egypt, he said to him, “I am the Lord; tell Pharaoh king of Egypt all that I am speaking to you.” But Moses said in the Lord’s presence, “Since I am a poor speaker, why would Pharaoh listen to me?” The Lord said to Moses, “See, I have made you like God to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron shall be your prophet. You shall speak all that I command you, and your brother Aaron shall tell Pharaoh to let the Israelites go out of his land. But I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and I will multiply my signs and wonders in the land of Egypt. When Pharaoh does not listen to you, I will lay my hand upon Egypt and bring my people the Israelites, company by company, out of the land of Egypt by great acts of judgment. The Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I stretch out my hand against Egypt and bring the Israelites out from among them.” Moses and Aaron did so; they did just as the Lord commanded them. Moses was eighty years old and Aaron eighty-three when they spoke to Pharaoh. (Exodus 6:28-7:7, NRSV)

Since Moses pleaded with God about his inability to speak, God sent Aaron along for the 2 of them to speak to Pharoah.

God will work in and through all circumstances even when the one being used by God does not want to be.

You see God’s will will be done through us or in spite of us.

So follow where God is leading.

Make known

I will display my glory among the nations; and all the nations shall see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid on them. The house of Israel shall know that I am the LORD their God, from that day forward. And the nations shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity, because they dealt treacherously with me. So I hid my face from them and gave them into the hand of their adversaries, and they all fell by the sword. I dealt with them according to their uncleanness and their transgressions, and hid my face from them. Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Now I will restore the fortunes of Jacob, and have mercy on the whole house of Israel; and I will be jealous for my holy name. They shall forget their shame, and all the treachery they have practiced against me, when they live securely in their land with no one to make them afraid, when I have brought them back from the peoples and gathered them from their enemies’ lands, and through them have displayed my holiness in the sight of many nations. Then they shall know that I am the LORD their God because I sent them into exile among the nations, and then gathered them into their own land. I will leave none of them behind; and I will never again hide my face from them, when I pour out my spirit upon the house of Israel, says the Lord GOD. (Ezekiel 29:21-29, NRSV)

God will show all nations who he is.

He will make himself known to all nations.

And as he does this his Spirit will be poured out upon the house of Israel, and through that, all will see His glory.

So allow him to use you to make himself known to all the nations around you.

170403The hand of the LORD came upon me, and he brought me out by the spirit of the LORD and set me down in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. He led me all around them; there were very many lying in the valley, and they were very dry. He said to me, “Mortal, can these bones live?” I answered, “O Lord GOD, you know.” Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones, and say to them: O dry bones, hear the word of the LORD. Thus says the Lord GOD to these bones: I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. I will lay sinews on you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live; and you shall know that I am the LORD.” So I prophesied as I had been commanded; and as I prophesied, suddenly there was a noise, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to its bone. I looked, and there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them; but there was no breath in them. Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, mortal, and say to the breath: Thus says the Lord GOD: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.” I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood on their feet, a vast multitude. Then he said to me, “Mortal, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They say, ‘Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are cut off completely.’ Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus says the Lord GOD: I am going to open your graves, and bring you up from your graves, O my people; and I will bring you back to the land of Israel. And you shall know that I am the LORD, when I open your graves, and bring you up from your graves, O my people. I will put my spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you on your own soil; then you shall know that I, the LORD, have spoken and will act,” says the LORD. (Ezekiel 37:1-14, NRSV)\

O mortal can these bones live again?

If I heard that standing over a valley of dried bones, I think I would scream and run away…

But my next thought would be to say what Ezekiel said, “O Lord God you know!”

And then God told Ezekiel to speak the bones to life. God spoke through Ezekiel to bring those bones to life.

Dem bones dem bones dem dry bones… brought to life by the word of God spoken through Ezekiel.

What kind of miracle will God do through you?

What will He speak through your life?

Wanting to give up?

He came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples followed him. When he reached the place, he said to them, “Pray that you may not come into the time of trial.” Then he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, knelt down, and prayed, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me; yet, not my will but yours be done.” Then an angel from heaven appeared to him and gave him strength. In his anguish he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down on the ground. When he got up from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping because of grief, and he said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not come into the time of trial.”  (Luke 22:39-46, NRSV)

Have you ever gotten to that point you did not want to go on?

Or maybe you wanted tog o on, you just couldn’t see how you could go on?

Have you ever questioned what you know you are suppose to do with your life?

We have all been there. We feel like there is something we need to do, and yet we are reluctant to try it. We are reluctant to follow where we are being sent…

Maybe we are reluctant for good reason. Maybe part of our life has to die in order for us to move forward. Maybe we have to move to a new place and will lose many friends over what we need to do…

Do not fret, we are in good company. Jesus the night before His trip to the cross asked God if there was another way. “Do we have to do it this way…”

Jesus questioned God. He knew where He was going and what it was going to cost. He did not want to do it. He wanted another option. A plan B…

Yet He did not stop with His question of the plan… He accepted it. He said, “Are you sure this is the only way? And if you are sure, then what you want, not what I think is best.”

We need to give up control, and know that if it is meant to be, God will be in it, and it will happen regardless of how much we get in the way of it!

Step out in faith and know that God will be there as He promised, not to make it easy, but to see you make it through!

Where you live…

‘And to the angel of the church in Pergamum write: These are the words of him who has the sharp two-edged sword: ‘I know where you are living, where Satan’s throne is. Yet you are holding fast to my name, and you did not deny your faith in me even in the days of Antipas my witness, my faithful one, who was killed among you, where Satan lives. But I have a few things against you: you have some there who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling-block before the people of Israel, so that they would eat food sacrificed to idols and practice fornication. So you also have some who hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans. Repent then. If not, I will come to you soon and make war against them with the sword of my mouth. Let anyone who has an ear listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches. To everyone who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give a white stone, and on the white stone is written a new name that no one knows except the one who receives it. (Revelation 2:12-17, NRSV)

Another text that brings us comfort!

Not that we are comforted by the fact that we are residing where Satan’s throne is, but we are comforted by the fact that God understands where we live!

You see there is nothing He hasn’t seen. There is no where He has not been.

He has been everywhere and experienced all of the things you will ever go through. He knows the suffering you are going to face, and then some.

Take solace in the peace that God has given you. And trust that He has been there and will be able to bring you through everything.
