What is truth?

Then they took Jesus from Caiaphas to Pilate’s headquarters. It was early in the morning. They themselves did not enter the headquarters, so as to avoid ritual defilement and to be able to eat the Passover. So Pilate went out to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?” They answered, “If this man were not a criminal, we would not have handed him over to you.” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and judge him according to your law.” The Jews replied, “We are not permitted to put anyone to death.” (This was to fulfill what Jesus had said when he indicated the kind of death he was to die.) Then Pilate entered the headquarters again, summoned Jesus, and asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus answered, “Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me?” Pilate replied, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?” Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.” Pilate asked him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.” Pilate asked him, “What is truth?” After he had said this, he went out to the Jews again and told them, “I find no case against him. (John 18:28-38, NRSV)

What is truth?

That is a great question. We live in the age of alternative facts. Where it seems as though we can just say something isn’t true and it isn’t.

But isn’t there really some absolute truth?

The picture above shows 2 people one on either side of a number. To one it looks like a 6 and to the other, it looks like a 9. It says, “Just because you are right, does not mean, I am wrong. You just haven’t seen life from my side.” Which is a somewhat true statement. But when the person wrote or drew the number, they had an idea in their mind which it was, a 6 or a 9. So, therefore, one of those in the picture is ultimately wrong. But why is it we have to say and feel that everyone is correct?

There is an ultimate truth. Gravity will always win and until the sun explodes the earth will rotate around it. But the ultimate truth is God created everything that exists and still cares for you as one of His most prized creations.

That is truth.

Gather

“Immediately after the suffering of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of heaven will be shaken. Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see ‘the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven’ with power and great glory. And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. (Matthew 24:29-31, NRSV)

The sun will be darkened and the moon will not give light and the stars will fall from Heaven….

Scary stuff…

Yet we have seen “stars” fall from Heaven in meteor showers, and the sun has eclipsed which is not giving light, which then I guess would not allow the moon to give light either because of the sun providing light for the moon…

It is hard to take this literally even thought it could be literal language because it has all happened…

But never have we seen after these events Jesus in the clouds with a trumpet blast.

But we do believe we will be called to meet Him when the kingdom of God comes in its fullness.

He will gather His people together and He will be with us! It is a promise regardless of when it comes, it is a promise we can count on.

You provide!

You visit the earth and water it, you greatly enrich it; the river of God is full of water; you provide the people with grain, for so you have prepared it. You water its furrows abundantly, settling its ridges, softening it with showers, and blessing its growth. You crown the year with your bounty; your wagon tracks overflow with richness. The pastures of the wilderness overflow, the hills gird themselves with joy, the meadows clothe themselves with flocks, the valleys deck themselves with grain, they shout and sing together for joy. (Psalm 65:9-13, NRSV)

Have you ever really stopped to think and list out all of the blessings you have in your life?

We complain about the heat and the snow and the rain… But without them, would anything really grow?

We have so many things in our lives to be thankful for, that we sometimes forget that they are blessings…

When the rain changes our plans of a picnic, we look down upon it, but without it, the garden would not grow and the food we are eating would not be there…

God so loves us that His blessings flow onto us daily…

He prepared this place for you, and you for this place. So see your life as God sees it, a blessing to you and to others!

Praise the Lord!

Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD from the heavens; praise him in the heights! Praise him, all his angels; praise him, all his host! Praise him, sun and moon; praise him, all you shining stars! Praise him, you highest heavens, and you waters above the heavens! Let them praise the name of the LORD, for he commanded and they were created. He established them forever and ever; he fixed their bounds, which cannot be passed. Praise the LORD from the earth, you sea monsters and all deeps, fire and hail, snow and frost, stormy wind fulfilling his command! Mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars! Wild animals and all cattle, creeping things and flying birds! Kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all rulers of the earth! Young men and women alike, old and young together! Let them praise the name of the LORD, for his name alone is exalted; his glory is above earth and heaven. He has raised up a horn for his people, praise for all his faithful, for the people of Israel who are close to him. Praise the LORD!(Psalm 148, NRSV)

Praise the Lord from where ever you are!

Because not only do we praise Him, but all of creation praises Him!

The sun and moon praise Him!

The stars praise Him, especially the shining ones (maybe that is why they shine!)

The waters above the Heavens praise Him (that would be the rain and the snow and all that precipitation stuff…)

The sea monsters and fire and hail, snow and frost, wind and mountains and hills, fruit trees and all peoples everything praises Him!

So Praise the Lord, for he commended and all was created!

You are here because of Him, so give Him praise!

Can you hear?

The Mighty One, God the Lord, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting. Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines forth. Our God comes; he does not keep silence; before him is a devouring fire, around him a mighty tempest. He calls to the heavens above and to the earth, that he may judge his people: “Gather to me my faithful ones, who made a covenant with me by sacrifice!” The heavens declare his righteousness, for God himself is judge! Selah (Psalm 50:1-6 ESV)

God is calling and summoning all of the world from the rising of the sun to its setting…

God does not keep silent, He is calling us to Him. He is a devouring fire and will judge the world.

He is calling us to Him. Can you hear Him?

Are you ready to listen and follow where He is leading?

help…

I lift up my eyes to the hills—from where will my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time on and for evermore. (Psalm 121, NRSV)

Where do you get help when you need it?

When you are walking in the valley and the world seems to be closing in around you, where do you go for help?

The psalmist says that his help comes from the Lord, the creator of everything. The Lord neither slumber or sleeps, so He is always available. He is your shade and protection against the sun, moon, stars, wind, rain and all things! He protects you.

The Lord will keep you in all ways and be your protection.

So look up and see the Lord is there for you. and know He is your help.
