Sing!

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come into his presence with singing. Know that the Lord is God. It is he that made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, bless his name. For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations. (Psalm 100, NRSV)

Come into the presence of the Lord singing!

Make music before the Lord, let us worship Him with gladness and make a joyful noise!

Give thanks always to the Lord for He is good and His love endures forever!

He will always be faithful to His promises and we should bless His name!

Return

170303Blow the trumpet in Zion; sound the alarm on my holy mountain! Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble, for the day of the LORD is coming, it is near—a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness! Like blackness spread upon the mountains a great and powerful army comes; their like has never been from of old, nor will be again after them in ages to come. Yet even now, says the LORD, return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; rend your hearts and not your clothing. Return to the LORD, your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love, and relents from punishing. Who knows whether he will not turn and relent, and leave a blessing behind him, a grain offering and a drink offering for the LORD, your God? Blow the trumpet in Zion; sanctify a fast; call a solemn assembly; gather the people. Sanctify the congregation; assemble the aged; gather the children, even infants at the breast. Let the bridegroom leave his room, and the bride her canopy. Between the vestibule and the altar let the priests, the ministers of the LORD, weep. Let them say, “Spare your people, O LORD, and do not make your heritage a mockery, a byword among the nations. Why should it be said among the peoples, ‘Where is their God?’” (Joel 2:1-2, 12-17, NRSV)

Even now the Lord is waiting for us to return to Him, to confess our sins and walk in His light. God is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. He does not do anger like us but waits for us to get our act together and when we come and then walk away, He continues to wait.

God is coming with a vengeance, but the Day of the Lord is not here yet. Return to God and walk in His ways, He is waiting for you.

How long…

161112How long, O LORD? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?
How long must I bear pain in my soul,
and have sorrow in my heart all day long?
How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?
Consider and answer me, O LORD my God!
Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep the sleep of death,
and my enemy will say, “I have prevailed”;
my foes will rejoice because I am shaken.
But I trusted in your steadfast love;
my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.
I will sing to the LORD,
because he has dealt bountifully with me.
(Psalm 13, NRSV)

How long will the Lord forget about me…

Have you ever felt the way this psalmist does at the beginning of the psalm?

Abandoned…

Left alone…

no one to help…

Sitting in pain all alone…

I think if we are all honest with ourselves, we have been in this place. We know exactly how the psalmist feels.

But these are the times to cling to God’s steadfast love, as the psalmist tells us. Because of the love the Lord has for us, we will make it through the pain, for when we cry out to the Lord He is there for us. Even when we feel all alone, we aren’t because He is always there for us.

Out of the depths

Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD.
Lord, hear my voice!
Let your ears be attentive
to the voice of my supplications!
If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities,
Lord, who could stand?
But there is forgiveness with you,
so that you may be revered.
I wait for the LORD, my soul waits,
and in his word I hope;
my soul waits for the Lord
more than those who watch for the morning,
more than those who watch for the morning.
O Israel, hope in the LORD!
For with the LORD there is steadfast love,
and with him is great power to redeem.
It is he who will redeem Israel
from all its iniquities.
(Psalm 130, NRSV)

Have you ever felt like you were separated from God?

In a deep dark valley?

In a place that God would never go…

God is always attentive to your cries!

He will always hear your voice.

He will forgive your wrongs and hold on to you.

He will forgive your iniquities and bring you back into the fold.

Just cry out to Him and He will raise you out of the depths!

endures forever

1 O give thanks to the LORD, for he is good,
for his steadfast love endures forever.
2 O give thanks to the God of gods,
for his steadfast love endures forever.
3 O give thanks to the Lord of lords,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
4 who alone does great wonders,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
5 who by understanding made the heavens,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
6 who spread out the earth on the waters,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
7 who made the great lights,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
8 the sun to rule over the day,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
9 the moon and stars to rule over the night,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
10 who struck Egypt through their firstborn,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
11 and brought Israel out from among them,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
12 with a strong hand and an outstretched arm,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
13 who divided the Red Sea in two,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
14 and made Israel pass through the midst of it,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
15 but overthrew Pharaoh and his army in the Red Sea,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
16 who led his people through the wilderness,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
17 who struck down great kings,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
18 and killed famous kings,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
19 Sihon, king of the Amorites,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
20 and Og, king of Bashan,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
21 and gave their land as a heritage,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
22 a heritage to his servant Israel,
for his steadfast love endures forever.
23 It is he who remembered us in our low estate,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
24 and rescued us from our foes,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
25 who gives food to all flesh,
for his steadfast love endures forever.
26 O give thanks to the God of heaven,
for his steadfast love endures forever.
(Psalm 136, NRSV)

The prescribed reading for today was Psalm 136:1-9, 23-26. But I started reading the psalm and I really think the psalmist was trying to make a point.

Notice I also did not reformat the text this time for the reading to put it in a nice neat paragraph to fit nicely with the picture. Because the way it is laid out now you can see the point of the psalm.

Every other line, for his steadfast love endures forever!

You see no matter what may come our way. No matter what life will throw at us, his steadfast love endures forever.

We have no reason to fear or worry, because his steadfast love endures forever.

near

With my whole heart I cry; answer me, O LORD. I will keep your statutes. I cry to you; save me, that I may observe your decrees. I rise before dawn and cry for help; I put my hope in your words. My eyes are awake before each watch of the night, that I may meditate on your promise. In your steadfast love hear my voice; O LORD, in your justice preserve my life. Those who persecute me with evil purpose draw near; they are far from your law. Yet you are near, O LORD, and all your commandments are true. Long ago I learned from your decrees that you have established them forever. Look on my misery and rescue me, for I do not forget your law. Plead my cause and redeem me; give me life according to your promise. Salvation is far from the wicked, for they do not seek your statutes. Great is your mercy, O LORD; give me life according to your justice. Many are my persecutors and my adversaries, yet I do not swerve from your decrees. I look at the faithless with disgust, because they do not keep your commands. Consider how I love your precepts; preserve my life according to your steadfast love. The sum of your word is truth; and every one of your righteous ordinances endures forever. (Psalm 119:145-160, NRSV)

I cry out to God in my isolation and wonder where He is…

Have you ever felt like God had abandoned you?

You know that Mother Teresa spoke about the dark night of the soul, where she felt like God was not near her!

The woman who has led and continues to lead many into service of God, and did many wonderful things to advance His mission felt like God had abandoned her…

We can feel that way, like we are all alone, but the psalmist tells us the promise of God is He is near. And all of His promises are true! No matter how far we think He is from us, really all we need to do is turn around and there He will be, right by our side, all the time. We are never alone, for He will preserve our lives according to His steadfast love and He will be near us always!

save me…

But you, O Lord my Lord, act on my behalf for your name’s sake; because your steadfast love is good, deliver me. For I am poor and needy, and my heart is pierced within me. I am gone like a shadow at evening; I am shaken off like a locust. My knees are weak through fasting; my body has become gaunt. I am an object of scorn to my accusers; when they see me, they shake their heads. Help me, O Lord my God! Save me according to your steadfast love. Let them know that this is your hand; you, O Lord, have done it. Let them curse, but you will bless. Let my assailants be put to shame; may your servant be glad. May my accusers be clothed with dishonor; may they be wrapped in their own shame as in a mantle. With my mouth I will give great thanks to the Lord; I will praise him in the midst of the throng. For he stands at the right hand of the needy, to save them from those who would condemn them to death. (Psalm 109:21-31, NRSV)

Have you ever felt like life is caving in on you? Like someone is coming up behind you and trying to erase your life and make everything harder than it has to be?

What do you do when you are at the end of your rope? Where do you turn when the rope is fraying and starting to unravel?

The Psalmist here tells us that we can turn to God, our Lord. He will take care of us and remove the eraser and give us the life He has intended for us! Just call out to the Lord and trust that He will save you according to His steadfast mercy!
