Reign Comes

170318I lift up my eyes to the hills—from where will my help come? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth. He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in from this time on and forevermore. (Psalm 121, NRSV)

The Lord will be your shelter and shade.

The Lord will protect you from everything that will come for you.

The Lord will be your help and the one who comes to your aid and protection.

The Lord never slumbers or sleeps and will always be there.

Trust He is your help.

To the hills…

161017I lift up my eyes to the hills—from where will my help come? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth. He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in from this time on and forevermore. (Psalm 121, NRSV)

I lift my eyes up to the hills…

I look up to see where my help is coming from.

God, the Lord of heaven and earth will be my shelter.

God will be my shade.

God who neither slumbers nor sleeps will watch over me and be my protection.

God will help me and guard me from all evil and harm.

God will always do this.

God will always be my protection.

What happened to the others?

On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats were with him. A great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?” And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?” (Mark 4:35-41, NRSV)

We read this section of mark and we are immediatley drawn to the power Jesus shows in stilling the storm.

He gets up from His sleep and says Peace! Be Still! and everything calms down around Him.

Now don’t get me wrong, it is something to be fixed upon.

But…

“And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats were with him.”

What happened to the other boats?

Did they make it across before the storm hit?

Did they get taken under during the storm?

Were they still there in the midst of the storm, and then everything was still, without explaination?

Or did they see Jesus still the sea?

Who then is this?

Even those who were not in His boat were saved! So why do we yet lack faith?

Sleeping…

He came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples followed him. When he reached the place, he said to them, “Pray that you may not come into the time of trial.” Then he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, knelt down, and prayed, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me; yet, not my will but yours be done.” [Then an angel from heaven appeared to him and gave him strength. In his anguish he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down on the ground.] When he got up from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping because of grief, and he said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not come into the time of trial.” (Luke 22:39-46, NRSV)

Pray that you may not come into the time of trial…

What did Jesus mean by this? Most of us pray every week, “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil…” or “Save us from the time of trial…”

We confess that we will face the trials and temptations of this world, because Jesus did so will we. So what did Jesus mean when He said, “pray so that you may not come into the time of trial?”

And how does this impact us today?

I like the question when He returns, “Why are you sleeping?” Have you ever been praying and all of sudden you wake up and wonder when you stopped praying and went to sleep?

I have. I have fallen asleep while praying many a time. Sometimes it is embarrassing. Why? Until now no one even knew! I was embarrassed because I was talking to God and I fell asleep. But I have done this to other friends before too. Sometimes I have been so into the conversation and it was so relaxing I felt like I was taken away.

But you see in this moment in the garden, Jesus is wanting them to pray that they will not be going with Him. They need to be alert, and ready.

Are you alert and ready?

Have you fallen asleep when Jesus has asked you to be at the guard?

Jesus will save us, and will be with us. No matter what the trial, or the temptation. He will always be there. Just listen to Him and heed what He asks of you.
