Salvation is Near!

11Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; 12the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; 13let us live honorably as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy. 14Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. (Romans 13:11-14, NRSV)

What time is it?

It is time for us to focus on Jesus and what God has for us to be doing.

We need to live in the light of Christ and show the world His love and allow God’s life to shine through.

We need to show the world we love one another and get along.

So all may know His love.

Love One Another

Little children, let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action. And by this we will know that we are from the truth and will reassure our hearts before him whenever our hearts condemn us; for God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have boldness before God; and we receive from him whatever we ask, because we obey his commandments and do what pleases him. (1 John 3:18-22, NRSV)

Let us love not by saying we love other, but by our actions showing that we love.

Even when our hearts condemn us, God is greater than that to love us and set us free.

God will empower us to be bold in our loving a world that hates us and God.

Be bold and love!

Finally, all of you, have unity of spirit, sympathy, love for one another, a tender heart, and a humble mind. Do not repay evil for evil or abuse for abuse; but, on the contrary, repay with a blessing. It is for this that you were called—that you might inherit a blessing. For “Those who desire life and desire to see good days, let them keep their tongues from evil and their lips from speaking deceit; let them turn away from evil and do good; let them seek peace and pursue it. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.” (1 Peter 3:8-12, NRSV)

Have a unity of spirit, sympathy, love for one another, a tender heart, and a humble mind. In other words live in harmony.

But what is harmony?

I went to and looked up harmony and found this as the definition: A relationship in which various components exist together without destroying one another”

A relationship of many parts that exists together without destroying another. Isn’t that truly a beautiful image of the church?

We should exist without wanting to bring the other down, lifting up their gifts and what they bring, and allow the whole piece to come together and be the masterpiece that God created.

The end of all things is near; therefore be serious and discipline yourselves for the sake of your prayers. Above all, maintain constant love for one another, for love covers a multitude of sins. Be hospitable to one another without complaining. Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received. Whoever speaks must do so as one speaking the very words of God; whoever serves must do so with the strength that God supplies, so that God may be glorified in all things through Jesus Christ. To him belong the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen. (1 Peter 4:7-11, NRSV)

What is the gift you have received?

Are you good with numbers?

Are you good with kids?

Are you good with listening?

Are you musically talented?

There are so many different gifts and so many ways in which to use them…

So how are you in the game? How are you using the talent that God gave you to spread His love to others?

Love each other with the tools you have been given by God to use, and spread His love through the use of that gift in service to the world!

Love one another

When he had gone out, Jesus said, ‘Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, “Where I am going, you cannot come.” I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.’ (John 13:31-35, NRSV)

I give you a new commandment!

Notice that Jesus did not say I have a suggestion for you to follow…

Or That I have a way you should live your lives…

Jesus told the disciples that He had a new commandment for them. He had something they had to do!

Love one another. And not just that they love one another, but they love one another as Jesus loved them.

They were all in places that Jesus should not have been around them, yet He still loved them. They did some really dumb things and caused Him pain and anguish, yet He still loved them. He got over their short comings…

So love one another as Jesus loved you!
