The New Commandment

When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’ I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:31-35, NRSV)

And they will know we are Christians by our…

Rule following?
Pointing out other’s sins?
Crosses we wear?
Choice of music?

No none of these will show we are Christians. They will know we are Christians by our LOVE! If we love one another. How will the world see Jesus if it sees us fighting and calling out each other?

The only way for the world to see love is if we show love.

So, love as He loved you.

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come into his presence with singing. Know that the Lord is God. It is he that made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, bless his name. For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations. (Psalm 100, NRSV)

Come into the presence of the Lord singing!

Make music before the Lord, let us worship Him with gladness and make a joyful noise!

Give thanks always to the Lord for He is good and His love endures forever!

He will always be faithful to His promises and we should bless His name!

20130803-131748.jpgHear this, all you peoples; give ear, all inhabitants of the world, both low and high, rich and poor together. My mouth shall speak wisdom; the meditation of my heart shall be understanding. I will incline my ear to a proverb; I will solve my riddle to the music of the harp. Why should I fear in times of trouble, when the iniquity of my persecutors surrounds me, those who trust in their wealth and boast of the abundance of their riches? Truly, no ransom avails for one’s life, there is no price one can give to God for it. For the ransom of life is costly, and can never suffice that one should live on forever and never see the grave. When we look at the wise, they die; fool and dolt perish together and leave their wealth to others. Their graves are their homes forever, their dwelling places to all generations, though they named lands their own. Mortals cannot abide in their pomp; they are like the animals that perish (Psalm 49:1-12, NRSV)

We have all heard the saying, “You can’t take it with you.” We can not take anything we have here with us to beyond the grave except the gift given to us by God for which there is no price we can give to God.

We need to look out for the lowly, the needy, the last, the lost, the little, and the least. Those who think because they have they can get what they want have made their grave and it is their wealth the psalmist tells us. We need to be in God and allow Him to work in and through us. We can not buy our way into His graces and the things we have here should be used for others not our own elevation.

Use what God has given you wisely and be there for others and always remember that you can’t take it with you.

Music of God

I will bless the LORD at all times;
his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
My soul makes its boast in the LORD;
let the humble hear and be glad.
Oh, magnify the LORD with me,
and let us exalt his name together!
I sought the LORD, and he answered me
and delivered me from all my fears.
Those who look to him are radiant,
and their faces shall never be ashamed.
This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him
and saved him out of all his troubles.
The angel of the LORD encamps
around those who fear him, and delivers them.
Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good!
Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!
(Psalm 34:1-8 ESV)

Can you identify with this psalm? I might be much like a song from your youth that brings about certain thoughts or feelings when you read it.

Music is powerful and draws us to places we once remembered or places inside of our selves where we go away to hide. When you hear, “Welcome to the Hotel California…” what do you think? Or how about “When the lights go down in the city…” Or maybe “amazing grace how sweet the sound…”

Can you identify with the lines of the psalm? “This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him
and saved him out of all his troubles.” We have all cried to the Lord in our troubles in our wanting… We are all blessed when we take refuge in Him. Read the psalm and remember that this was a song of David, or someone else who wrote it. It is a way to be drawn to a place where God will give you shelter, and protect you. God will deliver you from all of your worries if you will let Him. Draw near to Him and live in the life He will give you.

Perfect Harmony…

Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. (Colossians 3:12-17 ESV)

Have you ever heard a choir sing in perfect harmony? Even if you are not a music person, able to sing or play, you can hear it when a group is singing in harmony. It is a sweet sound like none other…

And of course there is the flip side of this. We all know when we hear something that is not in perfect harmony. This is a sound much like a pack of cats running from a little girl trying to pick them all up and love on them… You know the sound…

Which sound would you rather hear?

Which sound would you rather contribute to?

We all have the ability to sing together with all of the world in perfect harmony. SInce we are God’s beloved we need to put on compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience… That should be easy enough be kind and humble, meek and patient, and compassionate, looking out for the other, those who we think are less than us, and those who we think are higher than us are ones we need to serve and do all of these things to.

If one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. We have to forgive as God forgave us. Even when we did not and do not deserve His forgiveness He still forgives us. As the Lord’s prayer says, forgive us as we have forgiven those who have sinned against us. Do you really want to be forgiven the way you have forgiven?

And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. Love binds everything together in perfect harmony. If we can love one another the sound that will be made will be perfect harmonious and the most beautiful sound in the world!

Love as God has loved you and participate in the making of beautiful music!
