The Boy Jesus in the Temple

41Now every year his parents went to Jerusalem for the festival of the Passover. 42And when he was twelve years old, they went up as usual for the festival. 43When the festival was ended and they started to return, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it.44Assuming that he was in the group of travelers, they went a day’s journey. Then they started to look for him among their relatives and friends. 45When they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem to search for him. 46After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.48When his parents saw him they were astonished; and his mother said to him, “Child, why have you treated us like this? Look, your father and I have been searching for you in great anxiety.” 49He said to them, “Why were you searching for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?” 50But they did not understand what he said to them.51Then he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them. His mother treasured all these things in her heart. 52And Jesus increased in wisdom and in years, and in divine and human favor. (Luke 2:41-52, NRSV)

If you ever thought you were a bad parent, then this is your verse. Here Mary and Joseph leave Jesus in the Temple for three days!

They assumed he was with their family somewhere in the group as they traveled and only after a days journey did they start to worry. But Jesus was where he should have been, in his Father’s house.

And isn’t that really where all of us should be?

no better than slaves

for in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith. As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to the promise.  My point is this: heirs, as long as they are minors, are no better than slaves, though they are the owners of all the property; but they remain under guardians and trustees until the date set by the father. So with us; while we were minors, we were enslaved to the elemental spirits of the world. But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God. (Galatians 3:26-4:7, NRSV)

I’ve read this passage many times and heard points argued around it.

But today I read something that has missed my attention before.

It really just drives home the point. In Paul’s day the order of the household went:

But if the children (sons or daughters) were minors they were no better than the slaves!

So those who will control the house, until that point comes are in a sense still property.

And in that sense we are all the same under Christ. No longer Jew or Greek, slave or free, man and woman. We are all the same in the eyes of God.

We are all no better than the slaves, but what a great master to serve!

Happy Daddy Day…

I am thinking and pondering this day how my life has been richly blessed and how incredibly inept as a father I am.

I think about all of the things I do wrong, and yet my children still love me.

I think of all the ways I fail my daughters and my wife, yet they still care for me.

I think of all the times I have dropped the ball, and they are still there for me.

I have failed them in so many ways, yet they still love me and tell me how much I mean to them.

I wonder how I can be so richly blessed with three beautiful daughters and the most wonderful woman in the world…

I thank God every day for the wonderful blessings I have in my girls and try to give them a 10th of what they have given to me.

Happy Daddy Day to all of you. I pray that you are blessed to be a blessing.
