In the Garden of Gethsemane

36Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37He took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be grieved and agitated. 38Then he said to them, “I am deeply grieved, even to death; remain here, and stay awake with me.” 39And going a little farther, he threw himself on the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet not what I want but what you want.” 40Then he came to the disciples and found them sleeping; and he said to Peter, “So, could you not stay awake with me one hour? (Matthew 26:36-40, NRSV)

What would you do if Jesus told you to wait with him and pray with him? Could you pray for an hour without falling asleep?

I remember being on a spiritual retreat as a member of the group putting the retreat on before I became a pastor and having the honor of being in the chapel and praying for the men who were first time people on the retreat were hearing a talk for about an hour and a half and being able to pray for the man speaking and all of those hearing his message. It was so powerful to lift them all to God.

But doesn’t God ask us to do this every day? And how often do we fall asleep on God?

Can you stay awake for God?
