This is the one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one that testifies, for the Spirit is the truth. There are three that testify: the Spirit and the water and the blood, and these three agree. If we receive human testimony, the testimony of God is greater; for this is the testimony of God that he has testified to his Son. Those who believe in the Son of God have the testimony in their hearts. Those who do not believe in God have made him a liar by not believing in the testimony that God has given concerning his Son. And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. (1 John 5:6-12, NRSV)
Whoever has the Son has life, and whoever doesn’t have the Son does not have life.
Seems pretty simple. Except, who gets to decide who has the Son and who doesn’t?
According to this if you believe in Jesus and you have Him in your heart then you have the Son. However in today’s society there are many differences of opinion on what it means to follow Christ. We do not agree that everyone who claims to be a part of the body of Christ is a part of the body of Christ.
So who gets to decide?
Here is the thing, the Bible does not tell us not to judge, it says “judge not unless you want to be judged.” If you are willing to judge others, then you have to be willing to be judged by others. And that is fine for some, but for me, I am glad it is not my call on who has the Son and who doesn’t. In fact I can only truly be sure for me. I can help you see God and know He wants to be in a relationship with you. I can share with you about my faith and the grace He has given me. I can love yo as He has loved me. But then God has to give you the Son. I can not give Him, because God is the only one who can judge whether or not someone has the Son.
God decides. Not us. So do not get upset with someone else because they sin differently than you. Love them. and let God decide.
